Riyadh – Mubasher: Spain will deliver 400 laser-guided bombs in the coming period to Saudi Arabia, the European country’s foreign minister Josep Borrell has said.
"In the end, the decision is to deliver these bombs to honour a contract dating from 2015," the AFP reported citing Borrell as saying on Thursday.
Last week, Spanish authorities said they would halt the weapons delivery to the rich-oil nation. However, on Monday, Spain’s defence minister Margarito Robles “mooted a U-turn on the arms deal,” the French news agency added.
Saudi Arabia had already paid EUR 9.2 million ($10.7 million) for the laser-guided bombs.
Humanitarian groups have criticised the deal, particularly amid ongoing strikes by Saudi Arabia on Yemeni Houthis.
Cancelling the deal would hurt a much larger order for five Corvette warships worth EUR 1.8 billion ($2.1 billion) and threaten thousands of jobs, the AFP said.
The Corvette ships are to be built by Spain's Navantia shipyard in southern Andalusia.
