Saudi transport sector nabs 22% of total fuel consumption

Riyadh – Mubasher: Saudi Arabia’s transportation sector consumes around 22% of total energy consumed by the kingdom, Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported on Thursday, citing official data.

Around 90% of the fuel consumption goes to land transportation, as around 12 million vehicles use close 910,000 barrels of oil and diesel per day.

The increase in energy consumption in the kingdom is mainly attributed to the rising population, which has seen a yearly growth of around 2.7% to reach 30 million people.

The number of vehicles is set to continue rising in the coming years if the government does not take action to reduce this growth, the data showed.

Vehicles will likely reach 26 million utilising 1.86 million oil and diesel barrels per day, SPA added.
