Shell discovers new gas field in Egypt

Cairo - Mubasher: Royal Dutch Shell announced on Wednesday discovering a new natural gas field in the Alam El-Shawish concession area in Egypt’s western desert.

The reserves of the new natural gas field total nearly 500 billion cubic feet, with more possible reserves, according to Shell Egypt chairman, Aidan Murphy.

This places the new field among the largest natural gas discoveries in the western desert in past years, Added Murphy.

Shell gained the rights to explore the Alam El-Shawish area for oil and natural gas in 2012, and signed an agreement with the ministry of Petroleum and the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation (EGPC) at the end of 2013.

Last year, Italian energy company Eni announced it discovered a “supergiant” gas field off the coast of Egypt, the largest ever found in the Mediterranean Sea.
