Sudan unveils progress on GERD’s timeline with Ethiopia, Egypt

Cairo – Mubasher: Sudan, Ethiopia, and Egypt have made a progress towards setting a timeline for filling the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), being built over the Nile at a cost of $4 billion, the Sudanese irrigation minister said.

An agreement between all the parties on the filling of the dam could be reached, Khader Mohamed told Reuters.

The 6,000-megawatt GERD is the centrepiece of Ethiopia’s bid to become the largest power exporter in Africa, the London-based news agency reported.

The dispute between the three African countries is focused on shares of the waters of the Nile, which extends over 6,695 kilometres from Lake Victoria to the Mediterranean and is the economic lifeblood of these nations.

Cairo stated that the Ethiopian dam would affect water supplies that have fed Egypt’s agriculture and economy for thousands of years.
