Suez Canal Container Terminal invests over $900m since 2004

Cairo – Mubasher: Suez Canal Container Terminal (SCCT) witnessed a 50% rise in exports and imports, hitting 283,834 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in 2020, compared to 188,127 TEUs in 2019, Chief Commercial Officer of Suez Canal Container Terminal (SCCT), Sunay Mukerjee, said.

During a media roundtable held on Tuesday titled: “2020 Year of Performance, 2021 Year of Growth”, Mukerjee revealed that 359,401 TEUs have been handled in August 2020, scoring highest monthly record since 2004.

In December 2020, gate volumes surged by 60% with 31,000 TEUs achieved, a leap that hasn’t been witnessed since December 2016.

Quay volumes hiked by 20% for the second consecutive year, marking the highest-ever annual quay throughput with 2.34 million quay moves, an equivalent of 3.783 million TEUs, named by APM Terminals as Terminal of the Year for 2020 among other affiliates worldwide.

The Chief Operating Officer of SCCT, Mahmoud Ayoub, said, “SCCT has fully dedicated its $60 million investments to revamp the terminal’s infrastructure by successfully heightened six ship-to-shore cranes, establishing Reefers’ Maintenance Center and refurbishing quays to competently encompass two EEE vessels simultaneously, a phenomenal service that SCCT has proudly brought to Egypt for the very first time.”

In 2021, SCCT plans to add another six ship-to-shore cranes to serve super-post panamax vessels with 12 quay cranes, along with supplying 10 new rubber-tired gantry (RTG) cranes to complement its previously supplied six RTGs, Ayoub noted.

The Governmental Affairs and Public Relations Director at SCCT, Hany El-Nady, commented: “Over the past 17 years, SCCT has committed itself to add value and contribute greatly to Egypt’s welfare and national economy. With investments exceeding $900 million so far, SCCT took upon itself capitalising the potentials of its 3,000 workforce, giving back to the underprovided communities in Port Said and North Sinai, while optimising its capacities to become the leading transshipment hub in the Eastern Mediterranean  and Egypt’s gateway to the world.”
