Suez Canal revenues rise to $449.2m in Oct

Cairo - Mubasher: Egypt’s revenues from the Suez Canal went up to $449.2 million in October, compared with $448.2 million in September, according to a report issued by the Suez Canal Authority on Monday.

Revenues from the international waterway hit its highest level in 2014, when it recorded $5.465 billion up from $5.110 billion in 2013.

The number of ships passed through the canal declined to 1,500 in October, compared with 1,515 in September.

The Suez Canal is the fastest shipping route between Europe and Asia. President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi inaugurated a $4 billion expansion of the canal on 6 August.

Egyptian authorities predicted that the expansion would boost annual revenues from the canal from $5.3 billion in 2014 to $13.2 billion in 2023.
