Supreme Council of Energy, EmiratesGCB launch efficiency benchmarking project

Dubai – Decypha: Emirates Green Building Council (EmiratesGCB), in partnership with the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy (DSCE), calls for Dubai-based hotels, shopping malls, and schools to partake in a “Benchmarking Project”, to assess their building efficiency.

EmiratesGBC is an independent forum which aims to preserve the environment through the promotion and encouragement of green building practices.

The Benchmarking Project was launched in the wake of the announcement of the partnership between the EmiratesGCB and the Supreme Council of Energy in Dubai last year to support the Building Efficiency Accelerator (EBA).

Under the new project performance of 100 buildings in Dubai will be assessed within three main categories: hotels, shopping centers, and schools.

"This project represents an ambitious and crucial towards determining the energy efficiency level in the old buildings in Dubai at the moment. We are confident that the results from the assessment will have a substantial role in determining the necessary actions to modernize the buildings, and provide information that will help in the development of the required laws and regulations relating to the sustainability of urban environments,” said Saeed Alabbar, EmiratesGBC Chairman.

"Based on the Council's standing as a member of EBA program, we are keen to take effective steps to promote energy efficiency in our urban environment and contribute to a constructive role in achieving Dubai targets for clean energy by 2050,” announced His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum strategy, Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, may Allah protect him,” said Ahmed Ahmed Butti Mehairbi, Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Energy in Dubai.

Energy consumed in buildings is responsible for 50% of total carbon emissions in some cities, and up to 80% in a number of major cities.

EmiratesGBC was founded in June 2006, and during the same year became the emember to join the World Green Building Council. EBA is funded by Global Environment Facility (GEF) and was launched under the umbrella of Sustainable Energy for All, an initiative by the Secretary-General of the United Nations program.
