Cairo – Mubasher: Telecom Egypt entered into a partnership with a group of global telecommunications companies to build 2Africa, set to be the most comprehensive subsea cable between Europe, the Middle East, and 16 countries in Africa.
The consortium includes China Mobile International, Facebook, MTN GlobalConnect, Orange, stc, Telecom Egypt, Vodafone, and WIOCC, according to a statement on Thursday.
“At 37,000km long, 2Africa will be one of the world’s largest subsea cable projects and will interconnect Europe (eastward via Egypt), the Middle East (via Saudi Arabia), and 21 landings in 16 countries in Africa.”
The system is projected to come into service by the end of 2023 or the beginning of 2024, delivering more than the total capacity of all subsea cables connected to Africa, with a design capacity of up to 180 terabytes per second (Tbps) on some parts of the system.
Alcatel Submarine Networks (ASN) has been appointed to build the cable.
