UAE delays launch of nuclear reactor

Mubasher: The UAE has postponed launching the first nuclear reactor for a year, Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) said on Friday.

ENEC clarified that the delay decision is because Nawah, the operator of the power reactor which is built by South Korea, did not yet receive the operating licence from the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR).

“A source familiar with the situation said that Nawah - the joint venture between the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) and KEPCO that will operate the plant - is struggling to get an operating license, which could delay the start-up of the first plant by several months, possibly to the end of this year,” according to Reuters.

ENEC expects to complete the UAE civilian nuclear energy programme in 2020, after launching the fourth nuclear station and connecting it with the power network in the UAE.
