Dubai – Mubasher: The National Advisor Bureau Limited announced plans to launch the UAE-Iceberg project to tow icebergs from Antarctica, which contains 10,000 trillion tonnes of snow and ice, to the coastline of Fujairah.
The launch of the project, which aims at supporting global responses to drought worldwide and other water-related humanitarian projects, comes alongside with the Year of Zayed in 2018, according to the company’s recent statement.
The project’s total cost ranges $50 million to $60 million, the UAE-based company said.
In 2017, the firm revealed its intentions to launch this project amid worries of resulting in a trough and rainstorms all year round.
“We have been working hard on the project for the past year and are moving to the next stages,” Abdullah Mohammed Sulaiman Al Shehi, National Advisor Bureau managing director, told Gulf News on Sunday.
The company will start the project’s pilot phase by the second half of 2019 with the transport of an iceberg towards the coast of Australia or South Africa, as scheduled.
The iceberg is expected to be towed to the UAE by the first quarter of 2020.
