UAE launches first Arab Lunar Mission

UAE - Mubasher: The UAE has launched the Emirates Lunar Mission, a 100% Emirati-made lunar rover, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai, announced on Tuesday.

Named 'Rashid', the rover will land on the surface of the moon by 2024 in areas that have not been explored by previous missions to study the lunar surface soil and the thermal properties of the lunar surface.

To be developed in the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC), the lunar rover will also explore the lunar photoelectron sheath and mobility on the lunar surface.

Hence, the UAE will be the fourth country in the world to participate in a lunar exploration mission and the first Arab country to launch a lunar mission.

The first Arab lunar rover will be equipped with two high-resolution cameras, a thermal imager, an inertial measurement unit (IMU), and a microscopic camera.

It is noteworthy to mention that on Monday, 28 September, the UAE launched its first environmental nanosatellite, MeznSat, aboard the Russian Soyuz-2 rocket from the Plesetsk Cosmodrome in Russia.
