UAE's Al Ghurair launches AED 100m education fund for refugees

Dubai – Mubasher: Emirati businessman Abdul Aziz Al Ghurair announced that he has launched an AED 100 million ($27 million) education fund for refugees under the name of “The Abdul Aziz Al Ghurair Refugee Education Fund”.

The new fund will be very beneficial to many young refugees affected by wars residing in the UAE but are unable to afford school fees in the country, Al Ghurair noted at the occasion of World Refugee Day.

The initiative will support the education of around 5,000 children within the coming three years, Arabian Business reported.

“Young people whose education has been interrupted by conflict deserve a chance to rebuild their lives and have a shot at a good future,” Al Ghurair commented.

The fund will support high-impact education programmes at the secondary, vocational and tertiary levels of education for refugee youth in Jordan and Lebanon. The fund’s first round will start by the new school year, while the second will be in early 2019.

“The refugee education fund will allow us to reach thousands of children through partnerships with [educational] institutions and non-governmental organisations,” Maysa Jalbout, CEO of the fund, said.
