UAE - Mubasher: The UAE’s Hope Probe has sent the first image of Mars after successfully entering the orbit of the Red Planet on Tuesday evening, 9 February 2020, the Emirates News Agency (WAM) reported.
The picture is the first of over 1,000 GB of new Mars data that will be sent by the Probe to the earth to be shared with over 200 academic and scientific institutions across the world.
The image was taken by the Probe's EXI instrument from an altitude of around 25,000 km above the Martian surface.
The image shows the north pole of Mars in the upper left and the largest volcano in the solar system, Olympus Mons, emerging into the early morning sunlight, at the centre.
In addition, the image presents the three large shield volcanoes of Tharsis Montes.
It is noteworthy to mention that on 9 February, the first Arab interplanetary mission arrived at Mars after the Probe had travelled over 493 million kilometres in a seven-month journey in space to enter Mars.
