UAE’s Masdar, Norway’s Statoil open Hywind Scotland in UK

Abu Dhabi - Mubasher: The Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar) and Norway’s Statoil on Thursday opened the Hywind Scotland project in the UK.

Hywind Scotland is the first commercial-scale floating wind farm in the world, according to Masdar, which owns 25% of the project’s shares, while Statoil holds the remaining 75%.

Hywind Scotland will be connected to a one megawatt-hour (MWh) lithium battery to reduce the intermittency of wind energy, said Masdar in an official statement.

“Masdar has a long-standing commitment to renewable energy in the United Kingdom, and we are immensely proud to deliver our first project in Scotland alongside our partners,” said Mohamed Al Ramahi, Masdar’s CEO.

“Hywind Scotland is showing that floating wind technology can be commercially viable wherever sea depths are too great for conventional fixed offshore wind power,” the top official added.

Masdar’s third wind farm in the UK, the Scottish energy plant will provide 20,000 homes with clean energy.

“The learnings from Hywind Scotland will pave the way for new global market opportunities for floating offshore wind energy,” Irene Rummelhoff, executive vice president of the New Energy Solutions business area in Statoil, commented.
