Mubasher: Piling and ground engineering contractor NSCC has been awarded a $4.5 million contract from Bahrain’s Ithmaar Development Company (IDC) as part of the Dilmunia megaproject.
Under the deal, NSCC will work on Bahrain’s Grand Canal and Marina project by IDC.
NSCC will be responsible for soil improvement and soil levelling, as well as contiguous pile works, which all form the pre-construction preparatory activities for the Grand Canal, Dilmunia project director Jean-Claude Bejjani revealed, noting that contract-related works had commenced in mid-December 2018.
This part of the contract is slated for completion by mid-March 2019, Bejjani explained.
Meanwhile, NSCC said that construction for the Grand Canal will begin “after the execution of early works.”
As for the Grand Canal project, which will be Bahrain’s largest man-made water body, this will cut through the stretch of Dilmunia in a semi-circular route and will be one of Bahrain’s longest continuous promenades for the island’s residents and visitors.
It is worth noting that the Grand Canal will span an area of 1.7km at a width of 15 metres to 35 metres. It will be filled with seawater pumped in around its mid-point, the company explained, indicating that the water would be gravitated in the canal’s two directions of the canal.
IDC CEO Mohamed Galal Alsayed noted that the timely completion of the project’s early works would “enable IDC to proceed further in the construction of the Grand Canal and Marina.”
IDC is a 100%-owned subsidiary of Bahrain-based Islamic retailer Ithmaar Bank, which is listed in Dubai, Bahrain, and Kuwait. Ithmaar is also the Dilmunia Development Fund’s investments manager.
