UAE’s RTA marks 2.2m e-payment taxi fares in 2017

Dubai – Mubasher: The number of taxi fare payments carried out electronically reached 2.21 million transactions in 2017, data released by the UAE’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) showed.

The RTA compiled the data, which included payments via nol and credit cards, from the Dubai Taxi Corporation and franchise companies,

“The number reflects an increase of about 731% from the level of transactions clocked last year, which amounted to 266,330 transactions,” the RTA said in a statement.

“The hike in transactions…is indicative of the remarkable public acceptance of these e-payment means as they are smooth and sophisticated,” stated Adel Shakri, director of transportation systems at the RTA’s Public Transport Agency.

“In the context of its policy of urging taxi drivers to encourage passengers to use nol or credit cards in payment of their taxi fares, the RTA has rewarded drivers who contributed to the enhanced use of those two e-payment methods,” Shakri added.
