UAE's Thumbay Group eyes medical expansion in Africa

Dubai - Mubasher: The UAE-based Thumbay Group is looking to inaugurate a medical university and teaching hospital in Ghana and an expansive “Medicity” in Egypt, the group’s founder and president said.

The Ghana plan came as a result of a visit by the country's president Nana Akufo-Addo and First Lady Rebecca Akufo-Addo to the UAE, Thumbay Moideen told Arabian Business.

“They came here and invited us to set up a medical university. We get a lot of students from the African continent,” Moideen said.

“We accepted and they gave us all kinds of support. We started and it’s now in the process. It’s a long procedure getting accreditation, but it’s being done,” he added.

Moideen projected that operation at the Ghana facility will commence by 2020.

Moreover, he unveiled the group’s plans for a larger set of facilities in Egypt.

“The Egyptian government invited us to come. We’re calling it a Thumbay Medicity, with a university hospital and everything we have here [in Ajman], with health clubs, housing, everything,” Moideen said.

He also noted that the group has also been weighing up investment opportunities in other countries, such as Malaysia which is “unfortunately saturated with medical schools.”

Earlier this month, Thumbay Group revealed that it entered into an agreement with the Serbian government to build a Gulf Medical University and Thumbay Hospital in Belgrade.

The university and hospital in Belgrade will be established in phases and is also expected to be fully operational in 2020, according to a statement.
