US states, cities defy Trump’s withdrawal from climate accord

Mubasher: An alliance called ‘America's Pledge’ consisting of a number of states, cities, businesses and universities in the United States of America announced on Saturday their commitment to combat global warming, CNBC reported.

The move comes despite US President Donald Trump's administration withdrawing from the Paris climate agreement.

Former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg said that it is important for the world to know that the American people are committed to its goals, and there is nothing Washington can do to stop us.

Govervor Jerry Brown of California added that the US has federal system, where the states have real power as do cities. And when cities and states combine together, and then join with powerful corporations, they can achieve their goals.

The alliance, which has an economy larger than Japan and Germany combined, says it won't be able to achieve the necessary cut in greenhouse gas emissions without some efforts at the federal level, according to CNBC.
