Unemployment in Jordan reaches 14.7%

Mubasher: Unemployment rates in Jordan went up to 14.7% by the end of the second quarter in 2016, with rate among males being 12.9% and 22.8% among females, according to the Jordanian Department of Statistics report.

The unemployment rate increased 2.8% to a record high compared to its level in the same period of 2015.

These unprecedented rates are record breaking, said Amer Gamal head of the labour market observatory unit in the Jordanian Department of Statistics.

The surging unemployment rates are due to the rise in the number of refugees from neighbor countries, namely Syria, having a negative impact on the availability of job opportunities for Jordanians, Gamal added.

College graduates are also suffering from higher unemployment rates, at 18.6%, the report indicated.
