World’s biggest sovereign fund surpasses $1tn

Mubasher: Norway’s sovereign-wealth fund, which is the largest in the world, has surpassed $1 trillion in assets on 19 September.

The Norwegian fund, which owns more than 1% of all the shares in the world, has reached this level a year earlier than expected, as reported by the Economist.

Norway’s sovereign fund gained over $100 billion in the past year, thanks in large measure to the global stock market boom in 2017, as around two-thirds of its assets are held as equities.

The Economist also indicated that another factor that is helping the fund is that Norwegians continue to earn fat revenues from pumping North Sea oil and gas, which go to the fund to be invested abroad, with an influence likely to keep on growing.
