Yemen reconstruction needs political agreement - Official

By: Aseel Bin Taleb

Riyadh – Mubasher: Yemen's reconstruction depends on reaching a political agreement, said GCC assistant secretary general for foreign affairs, Abdel Aziz Aluwaisheg late Tuesday.

He added that the Yemeni government has already started the immediate works such as fixing the power plants and water grids and preparing hospitals.

Most donors believe that it is important to wait until a political resolution for a complete reconstruction has been reached, Aluwaisheg told Mubasher.

“If we start the reconstruction process amid the current situation, the projects are likely to be destroyed, and most donors do not want to risk it,” he stated..

Resuming work in the oil sector is underpinned by two conditions, which are a safe environment and making sure that the government’s financial aid arrive to the Yemeni people and not seized by the Houthis, the top official highlighted.

Speaking on the sidelines of the workshop held on Tuesday in Saudi Arabia on the recovery and reconstruction of Yemen, Aluwaisheg further noted that the minting of a new Yemeni currency had not been tackled during the workshop, but will be discussed by the Yemeni government and the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
