Dubai - Mubasher: Emirates Integrated Telecommunications Company (du) is currently completing experimental stages of LiFi technology, which is expected to be launched by the beginning of 2018, said Jihad Tayara, vice president of business development and partnerships at du.
Light Fidelity or Li-Fi is the newest communication technology, it is a wireless network that uses LED lights instead of radio waves, with speeds of up to 224 gigabits per second.
LiFi is 100 times faster than WiFi and its global market size is expected to reach $80 billion by 2021, according to Mordor Intelligence.
du aims at increasing WiFi spots in the UAE to 400 in 2017, it has completed 350 until now as part of the country-wide initiative WiFi UAE, which is dedicated to provide WiFi access to the public, Tayara told reporters on the sidelines of Gitex tech week in Dubai.
